1. Clean the car

The first step that you must do before putting your car on sale is to clean the car. Just a simple wash may do the trick. A clean car shows the buyer that the car is well maintained and taken care off. Take your time and give your car a good wash. If you can take it to the nearest car wash and
get it washed vacuumed and if possible a good wax. You can easily get these done under Rs. 1500/-. Trust me this would make your car look much better in photos. Besides you could spend the money you saved by advertising with easyadz.lk to add a bit of flare to your ride.

2. Take some good photos

Now that your car is bright and shiny it’s time to take some photos of it. First things first take your car to a clean place. If it’s your home and you have other vehicles make sure you move them so they won’t be in the pictures. The last thing you want the buyer to think you are some car businessmen isn’t it? So make sure your background is free and does not have any of your personal belongings. When you’re taking the photos make sure you have good lighting.

Now to the photography part. You don’t need to be a professional photographer to take pictures of your car. Follow these instructions and you will have some amazing photos at the end.

  • Make sure you take pictures in daytime (10am- 3pm) This will give you the best lighting.
  • When taking photos hold your phone horizontally, DO NOT hold it at an angle!
  • Switch off the flash if you have enough lighting.
  • Take clear front, back, two sides, Engine bay, instrument cluster with mileage, seats and a close look of the tyre.
  • Apart from these take many pictures and keep because many buyers will ask for more pictures through WhatsApp.
  • Do not try to deliberately hide anything because buyers will notice it straight away!

3. Make a good description

The description is where the potential buyer first gets to know your vehicle. Start your description with The Make, Model, Trim, The Year of Manufacturing and the colour. E.g. Honda Civic EX 2019 Black. This will give the buyer basic details of the vehicle. Next mention the mileage and then the options and other details that you want to mention. Do not skimp
out or go overboard either. A good description is all about finding the happy medium between “brief and thorough”.

Always be honest of your cars condition!

4. Select a good price

When deciding the price always think of what you would pay for your car. If your car low mileage, accident free and the full service history is available you could possibly as for a small premium. Always don’t over price your car make a fair price as the base on your mind. When quoting your price on the advertisement add 5%-10% to the price which will give you a slack when the buyer tries to negotiate.

Do not negotiate over the phone or through texts. Always ask them to come and inspect the vehicle and after that you can negotiate. Keep in mind that this is something that car businessmen do! They negotiate over the phone and try to make your mind set up to a much lower price. They will make you feel that the price you’re asking is much higher. Be aware of these tricks!

5. What You need when selling the car

Okay now let’s see what we have to do when we are closing the deal. First things first you need a transfer form from the RMV. This is where you have to fill out all the details about the transfer. You have to fill out all the details asked in the form alongside with 2 signatures of witnesses. After filling out the form as the seller you will have to detach the last two pages of the booklet and you should keep one page to yourself as a proof of the transfer and the other page needs to be sent to the RMV via post. (If the buyer is trustworthy you may give that particular page to the person). Legally speaking open paper transfers are not allowed in Sri Lanka but it has been a practice. Personally I would recommend transferring the ownership unless the buyer is trustworthy. Following Documents must be shared among the buyer and seller.

  • ID Copies of each person (Buyer and Seller)
  • No objection Letter by the Transferor
  • Letter acknowledging the transfer (Include Full names and addresses of Both parties, Vehicle number and Amount sold for)

Handling Cash is the other thing you have to consider. We would recommend asking for a “PAY ORDER” which is the safest way. If you are collecting cash, you can go to your bank and deposit the sum which also reduces the risk.

Finally, Hand over all the documents to the transferee and keep copies for yourself and give them both keys and congratulate them on their new purchase!
